Diwali festival has a mythological importance in Hindu Puranas. According to the Ramayana, Diwali is celebrated on the occasion of Lord Sri Rama’s  return to Ayodhya kingdom after vanquishing of King Ravana of Lanka, the people of Ayodhya had lit the entire kingdom with lamps to welcome their Lord’s visit after 14 years exile. Another prominent mythological story behind celebrating Diwali is the victory of Lord Krishna’s wife Sathyabama over the evil king Narakasura. So this festival is celebrated as the victory of good over bad. On the day of the festival, a replication of Narakasura is burnt in the streets which indicate the elimination of evil and giving a welcome to the festival.

The most important ritual of Diwali is Lakshmi Puja .On the auspicious new moon day, which is 'Amavasyaa' of the Hindi month of Kartik, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity - Lakshmi was incarnated. She appeared during the churning of the ocean, which is known as 'Samudra Manthan', by the demons on one side and 'Devatas' (Gods) on the other side. Therefore, the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the Lakshmi Puja, on the day of Diwali, became a tradition.

The great Hindu epic 'Mahabharata' has another interesting story related to the 'Kartik Amavasyaa'. According to the story, 'the Pandavas', the five brothers Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahdeva, were sentenced to thirteen years exile as a result of their defeat against 'the Kauravas' - Duryodhana and his ninety-nine brothers, at the game of dice. Therefore, the Pandavas spent thirteen years in the jungles and returned to their kingdom on the day of 'Kartik Amavasyaa'. On their return, the people of their kingdom welcomed the Pandavas by celebrating the event by lighting the earthen lamps all over in their city. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith: Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs.

In Jainism, on this special day, Lord Mahavira, the last of the Jain Tirthankar of this era, got Nirvana at Pavapuri, and therefore it referred as Deva Deepavali. It  marks the nirvana or spiritual awakening of Lord Mahavira on October 15, 527 B.C.
